The Aglais urticae butterfly is known in Britain as the 'Small Tortoiseshell', a reference to the colour and patterning of its wings. In Germany it is called 'Kleiner Fuchs', meaning 'little fox', a name again inspired by its colouring.
Butterflies are symbols of freedom, joy, rebirth, transformation and change. They are also associated with remembrance and memories of loved ones passed.
