In Japan, an annual festival takes place between the end of March and early May to celebrate the blossoming of the cherry trees. Friends and family come together for 'hanami' ('flower viewing') and celebrate this spectacular sight. Cherry blossom is considered to be a symbol of friendliness, rebirth, renewal and optimism. It is also said to represent 'hope'.
